Servant Leadership With MSC Spencer
MSC Spencer is a leadership conference giving sophomores a chance to improve their leadership skills. Spencer focuses on their pillars of innovative leadership, selfless service, and self-authorship. Sophomores go on a three day-conference to Dallas in order to work on these pillars. The conference consists of leadership speakers and a service project.
The first part of the conference is the speakers. The sophomores get the opportunity to listen to business leaders from many different backgrounds, including southwest airlines. Outgoing chair Liam Benkel said, “I get the most joy out of interacting with our speakers, they have so much to offer whether that be life advice or future career opportunities.” The speakers help create networking opportunities for the sophomores as well as delving into leadership and how to continue their growth in leadership.
The second part of the conference is the service. Spencer focuses on selfless service as one of its pillars and works on the growth of service through the second part of the conference. The service project was to visit the Dallas aquarium with Rainbow Days. Sophomore Sharon Ruiz spoke about her experience with the service. She was the only volunteer able to speak Spanish so she was paired with a child that only spoke Spanish. She said, “I was kind of nervous since the organizer told me they were quiet and reserved, but I was sure I could connect with them somehow.” Service is such a huge part of MSC Spencer and it is a very rewarding thing for the sophomores to experience. Ruiz said that, “the whole experience was truly heartwarming and left a deep impression on me.”
MSC Spencer is an amazing opportunity for sophomores to gain leadership experience, as well as networking opportunities. Sophomores this year loved it as Ruiz says, “It’s a memory that I will cherish forever.” As the staff transitions to a new year, they look forward to the new year and helping the class of 2026 grow in their leadership.
