Honoring the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The MSC Carter G. Woodson Black Awareness Committee (MSC WBAC) hosted the annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on January 26th, 2023.
JJ Torres, the MSC WBAC MLK Holiday and special projects director, spent the last year preparing for the big day by reaching out to potential speakers, meeting with caterers and vendors for the event, and handling contracts. The team came together to reach out to numerous media platforms in order to spread awareness of the event. With more than 750 in attendance to kick off Black History Month, the MLK Breakfast once again highlighted the importance of diversity and equity.
This year’s special guest was the daughter of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Bernice A. King. JJ Torres said one of the main points in King’s keynote address was “taking what you know now and spreading this same awareness to the community around us.” King also highlighted the importance of the next activist to come and how their job will never be done.
The Annual MLK Breakfast was honored for their hard work at this past year's MSC Awards with the MSC Culture & Education Program of the Year. Many of the team members walked away with awards as well. Gabby Oglive won the MSC First Year involvement Award. Christiana Salone was presented with the MSC Student Employee of the Year, and Ashley Dean won the MSC Director’s Award. The MSC WBAC also took home the MSC Team of the Year Award, presented to the committee’s leadership team.
The MLK Breakfast was a great success, and was the biggest in program history. The team has already started to plan and work on next year’s MLK Breakfast in hopes of continuing to grow the event and build upon what they have accomplished.
